Roadmap & Explanation

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody,

Due to recent discussions and changes, we thought it would be a good time to make a post explaining some thing

1) Update Roadmap
As we have stated in the Welcome Back thread, we have a strict roadmap which we want to follow. I am currently in the progress of reworking our clipping to make use of the new region system that has been implemented. Deluxe is going to host a beta server for staff to test the new systems thoroughly as they are massive changes.

Since these are such big changes, they will also require a lot of testing, but ultimately should fix a lot of annoying "features" (bugs/cheap fixes) on Runique. These issues include being able to interact with objects through walls, interacting with objects from weird angles, being dragged towards npcs when trying to range them and a lot of other small inconvenient bugs.

As I have been working on this roadmap, there has been a lack of content additions to the game, which can make Runique feel bland or even outdated - this brings us to point #2

2) We are getting a new developer!
We have been searching for someone to take on the role of content developer for Runique for the past week or so. We were able to find someone who has been with us in the past as a developer, Dexter. As with any new developer, we will have a trial period of two weeks, and if everything goes well it will become a permanent position.

Dexter's main focus as a content developer will be to work on new features from his own initiative which he deems worthy from community input/polls.

3) Coin Gambling Tickets

We believe that coin gambling tickets were a good way to help the economy get a jump start on launch and help the flow of selling and buying items. We now believe they have served their purpose, so they have been removed from ;;store. They can still be purchased through the blood money store and vote shop.

4) Custom Donations
There has been some drama recently regarding certain "custom donations" that were given, if you're not interested in this, you can simply skip this point as it just explains things from our point of view. Though the drama itself I feel was an overreaction or somewhat unnecessary, it does bring up some good points from the people who were willing to have an actual conversation and discussion about it.

There was two issues, which I will address separately

Black Skull
The black skull was one of the "Limited Stock" items which were put when the server first launched two weeks ago. Initially, I put 10 of each skull. They were not being purchased so after a day, I simply put down the stock amount to 5. Someone bought the black skull. Later that day, I decided to bring down the stock amount to 0. This was fine, until someone messaged me saying they wanted to purchase a black skull and couldn't buy it in time. I felt it was my fault as I took down the stock amount without any warning. I allowed him to purchase the skull.

I did not see this as a big deal and saw it as a one-time thing due to the circumstances in place, where someone actually wanted to buy it and I just so happen to bring the stock amount down manually. Other people did not see this that way, to which I can understand. I still feel this was not completely wrong, however with the reaction from others I do know that it won't happen again.

Drygore rapier
As a custom donation we allowed an Iron Man to purchase a drygore rapier as he stated that Iron Man can't get it any other way. The issues here were that he could de-iron at any point and the rapier could enter the eco, to which deluxe suggested that he would have the rapier removed if he ever de-ironed. The other issue was the amount that the rapier was sold for. It was exchanged for a 155k ticket, which is a complete lapse of judgement on my end and yes it was out of touch with item prices/the economy, to which I do apologize. Everyone here is human and we all make mistakes, this was my mistake and I own up to it completely.

This one I feel was the reason I wanted to bring this point up because I do know I messed up and committed a mistake that people were rightfully angry at. The rapier has been taken away from the person who purchased it and they will be refunded as soon as they send me the transaction id (they say it's still pending so we have to wait on that).

That's it for the explanation of my/our behind-the-scene PoV. If you are interested in more about the whole thing, I'll leave a small explanation of what I believe some people may ask. It's basically only one question: Why accept custom donations in the first place?

Some people may know how a server needs to operate behind-the-scenes in terms of marketing and advertisements, but to those who do not - there is a lot going on and a lot goes into it. I went more into specifics about financials on the "drama" thread (which is now only visible to staff), however I will try to keep it a bit more vague as I do not want to step on toes for people who are on the other end of these deals.

All in all, video advertisements can range from a quarter to half a grand from quality content creators per video. Lower end ones can cost from 50-100. Banners go for 300-500 per 15 days. FB/Google ads can go from $1-$2 per click (though it's suggested to be higher for the terms/interest in rsps). Developers are paid with salaries like the real people they are - they are not a charity (even in trial, our developer is going to be paid an actual salary). If you go to our banners, videos, etc you can try to estimate how much money has been invested into Runique. I invested a ton of my own personal money into Runique before it was even online. Sadly, these things aren't free and the thing with Runique is that it has not been out for longer than two weeks. Deluxe and I spoke about this and agreed to only do custom donations for the start until Runique had enough saved up so that we can keep the server going with everything it needs and not have to do "custom donations". As a side note, it was never meant to be a secret thing which is why we never told people to not speak about it or anything of the sort.

Maybe we should've not tried to rush things and just let it play out through time, but we know we would be constantly asked why there aren't more players online, or why we don't have more content being added (due to lack of other developers, etc).

With personally donating $1000 irl to this server via 07 (100% towards the server, unlike other recent events*cough* stoop*cough*)  when I first read some of the post/comments about the starting drama I was, at first, discouraged from making further donations and even debating about leaving like some of the others did. I think @air did a great job on expressing some concerns and thoughts that the community was feeling during that time. Which led me to stay quiet and see what the response was from the team, if there even was one.

So based on the urgency, maturity, detailed, and most importantly HONEST response we have just received proves to me my initial thoughts were wrong. It goes a long ways to be honest especially in the online community as many just aren’t capable of doing so. So for that I thank you.. I’m happy to stay and play on a server that I played growing up, and favorited due to its  unique  Gambling system, popularity,  and team.

A few words of thought...

Now with a possible two new developers I open a lot of the main rsps functions like duel arena, pking, and a possible introduction (something new to runique, I know you have the gambling system for a reason but maybe adjust it) to letting people host casino games like blackjack,55x2 etc will grow this server back to its roots..

In my personally opinion I think the three biggest things in a rsps are, in order,

1. DDSing

2. Gambling/ hosting games

3. Huge pk community

Issues like this are spread and twisted so easily, you’ve been very open from the start which you could of kept away from the community and left us in the dark. Instead you kept courage and was loyal to your word. I’m glad this situation can now be put to bed and we can work on the up coming future!

Thanks for explaining the donation drama and good to see we have another developer. I personally think you could've kept the limited items in store for longer even though not many were sold instantly. There are many people who can't donate alot real life money but can work towards a black skull or some other item by purchasing credits with ingame gp. I feel like those people needed more time to get the amount of credits by playing the game and getting credits that way.

Thank-you for the much needed elucidate.

I am looking forward to the clipping rework being implemented in the live game, it is going to make the game so much more smoother and enjoyable. I am ecstatic it was made a priority and not dragged out until complaints commenced to build up. I do marginally believe the relaunch was rushed, however, and that a minuscule handful of bugs should have been solved beforehand - clipping issues being one of them, and another being the frustrating client issue that causes your character to not be able to make any actions, thus making you have to exit out of the client. While it is often making our game-play frustrating, it has certainly pleased us knowing that they are being prioritised on top of everything else, and I probably speak for everybody here - I will be over the moon once the said bugs are solved.

I am happy that Dexter is back with us as a game developer, someone who is marginally familiar with Runique in general and has experience with its coding. Good luck in your 2 week trial. 👍 We are all bursting for new content, such as Chambers of Xeric, Theatre of Blood, The Inferno, etc., but I am hoping that the current content in-game will be looked into to commence with, as there is an abundance of room for improvement and a plethora of quality of life game updates are much needed. I am hoping that and the current threads in the suggestions section will be focused on to commence with.

Regarding custom donations - I do not disagree with them, I personally would have gone with a list of custom donations, rather than offering limited stock items in the Donation Store. I do, however, disagree with the items and the offers you had accepted for them. Custom donations have become a popular thing in the RuneScape Private Server scene, but they have always been known to be only cosmetic items that are not obtainable anywhere else, and have a very high price tag. Very few RuneScape Private Servers that I have lurked around have offered skin colours, infernal cape, elysian spirit shield, twisted bow, etc., in their custom donations list, but they were charged for a ridiculous price, and were listed in their custom donations - one RuneScape Private Server charged $100 for an infernal cape custom donation and $450 for an elysian spirit shield custom donation. As long as a majority of items are only cosmetic items that are not obtainable anywhere else in Runique, and have a very high price tag, then I would agree with Runique having a custom donation list. I personally would have charged $300+ for that drygore rapier.

Perpetuate to advertise, but I would suggest keeping the advertisements inhibited until an abundance of bugs are solved and that we have tons of new content to offer. I would personally wait for a large content update, along with a possible new game mode (group iron man for example) and then commence a sizably voluminous advertising campaign. A majority of the current player-base are Runique veterans, who enjoy the game for what it is and are very patient. I doubt anybody of us will be disappearing any time soon, we should be more focused on getting new players and ascertaining that they enjoy the game and choose to stick around.
